Modern novel harkening back to the times of the classic noir fiction genre with the story set in 1940s San Francisco.
The tale is populated with characters such as Sammy "Two Toes" and "The Cheese", men with dark glasses, and a Chinese side-kick. I love the use of the snappy chapter titles and the use of the authentic (though certainly not PC) language of the characters.I stuck close to Sammy and the Cheese as things went from bad to worse, as a shady air force general based at a little outpost in New Mexico enters the mix.
Whilst the opening scene worked really well as a first person narrative (voiced - in my mind - by none other than Bogart) - the switching between first and third person creates a little confusion. It would really have worked much better sticking to the one style of narrative.
